Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is rooted in a tradition that is thousands of years old. It’s benefits have been carefully studied and documented since 1979. If you are looking for improved sleep and physical well being, you may find MBSR helpful. MBSR has also been shown to improve emotional difficulties and support people in finding a different way to respond to stress. MBSR may assist people dealing with chronic pain.
Jon Kabat-Zinn defines Mindfulness as paying attention, on purpose, to what is going on in the present moment, non judgmentally. He further goes on to define nonjudgemental as suspending judgement. “When you become aware of what’s going on, you begin to realize how judgmental you really are. Then, you start to be judgmental about how judgmental you are.”
To cultivate mindfulness within ourselves, we practice a type of meditation that focuses on paying attention with our breath.
